Theta waves

In one sentence

Theta waves are brain waves of about 4 to 8 Hz on an EEG. They appear during drowsiness, light sleep, and some meditative states, and are studied in relation to memory.

Technical definition

Theta waves are brain waves with a frequency of roughly 4 to 8 Hz, slower than alpha but faster than the very slow delta waves. Frequency here is measured in hertz (Hz), the number of cycles a second, so 4 to 8 Hz means about four to eight cycles each second. These waves are read using EEG (electroencephalography), a painless test that records the brain's electrical activity through small sensors on the scalp. In human EEG, theta refers to "frequency components in the 4-7 Hz range", and it appears "during drowsiness and early sleep stages, such as N1 and N2", the lightest stages of sleep.1 Theta also rises with sleepiness and during some meditative states.2 A separate, much-studied theta rhythm in the hippocampus is tied to memory and spatial navigation in mammals.3

How it works

EEG bands are simply named ranges of brain-wave speed. From slowest to fastest, the common labels are delta (about 0.5 to 4 Hz), theta (about 4 to 8 Hz), alpha (about 8 to 12 Hz), beta (about 12 to 30 Hz), and gamma (above about 30 Hz). Theta sits in the slow-to-middle part of that range, between delta and alpha. Its presence tends to mark a drowsy, drifting state: the wind-down before sleep, light early (NREM) sleep, deep relaxation, and some meditative states. A separate, well-documented theta rhythm in the hippocampus is active during memory tasks and spatial navigation, which is why theta is studied far beyond sleep.3

On the evidence, honesty matters. Some audio products claim to "induce" a theta state, usually through binaural beats or isochronic tones, to aid relaxation or sleep onset. Rhythmic sound really can produce a matching rhythm in the hearing parts of the brain, a well-measured effect called the frequency-following response.4 But whether listening reliably shifts the wider brain into a theta state is modest and mixed; a systematic review found the studies inconsistent, with no clear trend either way.5 Treat any "theta wave" track as relaxing background sound, not a guaranteed way to change your brain state.
